India’s power consumption increased to 131.54 billion units (BU) in February 2025, up from 127.34 BU in February 2024, according to government data. However, the figures are not directly comparable, as 2024 was a leap year.
Peak power supply in a single day also rose to 238.14 GW, higher than 222 GW in February 2024. The highest-ever peak power demand was 250 GW in May 2024, surpassing the previous record of 243.27 GW in September 2023.
The power ministry projected peak demand to reach 235 GW during the day and 225 GW in the evening in May 2024. For June 2024, the estimates were 240 GW during the day and 235 GW in the evening. The ministry had anticipated that peak demand could touch 260 GW in summer 2024.
Now, government estimates suggest peak power demand in India may hit 270 GW in summer 2025. Experts believe power usage will increase further in March, as temperatures rise and cooling appliances like fans, coolers, and air conditioners see higher usage.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that March will be warmer than usual, with more heatwave days. Maximum temperatures in March are expected to be above normal across most of India, except for the southernmost parts of the peninsula.
India experienced its hottest February since 1901, with an average temperature of 22.04°C, which was 1.34°C above normal. IMD also forecasts above-normal heatwaves from March to May 2025 in most parts of the country, except in northeast India, extreme north India, and southwestern regions.
