India’s Organic Exports Jump 35% In FY25; Led By Cereals, Tea, And Spices

India’s organic product exports surged by 35% in fiscal year 2024–25, reaching $665.96 million (₹5,710 crore), according to data released by the government on Tuesday.

The sharp rise was primarily driven by increased shipments of organic cereals, tea, spices, medicinal plants, oilseeds, and processed foods.

In terms of volume, exports grew 41%, climbing from 0.26 million tonnes (MT) in FY24 to 0.37 MT in FY25, reflecting strong demand for Indian organic produce in global markets.

Major Growth In Organic Categories

Several key categories recorded substantial year-over-year gains:

  • Organic cereals (including rice) and millets: Rose to $161.67 million, up from $86.66 million
  • Processed organic foods: Increased to $154.01 million, from $129.61 million
  • Medicinal plant products: Grew to $88.57 million, compared to $72.42 million
  • Organic tea: Climbed to $45.13 million, up from $34.11 million
  • Organic spices: Reached $45.42 million, compared to $35.93 million
  • Organic oilseeds: Rose to $36.20 million, from $25.64 million

The government emphasized that this continued growth demonstrates rising global interest in Indian organic products and reflects positively on the country’s position as a trusted supplier of eco-friendly agricultural goods.

Experts Raise Concerns Over Certification Credibility

Despite the promising export figures, industry experts urged caution. They stressed that while the surge points to international demand, rebuilding the ‘Organic India’ brand requires more than numbers.

Some certifying agencies have come under scrutiny, prompting questions about the credibility of certification processes.

Analysts argue that to maintain momentum and strengthen India’s global organic footprint, more robust regulatory oversight and transparency in certification practices are essential.

Global Demand Rises; Challenges Remain

India’s performance in FY25 underlines the country’s growing role in the global organic supply chain.

However, experts believe that sustaining this growth will depend on quality assurance, traceability, and market trust, especially in key export destinations.

As global consumers become increasingly conscious about food safety and sustainability, India’s organic sector may need to balance expansion with authenticity and compliance.
