India’s Influencer Count Surpasses 4 Million; Signals Growth In Digital Marketing Opportunities

India’s influencer community has experienced explosive growth, surging to over 4 million influencers in 2023, up from fewer than 1 million in 2020.

This increase reflects the growing power of social media and influencers, with fashion, gaming, and arts and entertainment emerging as the top three categories, according to a report by influencer marketing intelligence platform, Qoruz.

Key Categories Lead The Growth

The report reveals that these three categories will continue to dominate the influencer space in India. By 2025, fashion influencers are projected to remain the largest group, with 470,000 influencers expected to engage audiences.

The gaming sector will follow closely behind with 467,000 creators, while arts and entertainment influencers are set to reach 430,000 by the end of 2025.

These trends underscore a growing opportunity for brands to tap into the influence of these creators to enhance their marketing strategies.

Influencers’ Strategic Role In Marketing

Influencers in India typically have public Instagram accounts with over 1,000 followers and strategically position themselves in niche categories to connect with their audiences more effectively.

This growing number of influencers presents brands with a unique opportunity to leverage the social media reach of these creators for targeted marketing.

Aditya Gurwara, co-founder and head of Brand Alliances at Qoruz, explained that influencers have evolved from simple product endorsers to becoming strategic partners for brands.

“Influencers now create authentic, context-driven content that resonates deeply with audiences, making campaigns more impactful than ever before,” he said in a press statement on Thursday.

Gurwara emphasized that the rise in categories such as gaming, travel, and lifestyle presents a golden opportunity for brands to collaborate with creators who truly understand their audiences.

“Success lies in building long-term relationships with these creators, using data to identify the right fit, and crafting campaigns that go beyond reach to foster real engagement and trust,” he added.

Influencer Marketing’s Role In India’s Economy

This growth is particularly significant in light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on the creator economy. In his recent Mann Ki Baat address, he highlighted the crucial role influencers and digital content creators will play in achieving India’s goal of becoming a $ 5 trillion economy.

The influencer marketing sector is projected to continue its upward trajectory, with the industry expected to grow from ₹2,344 crore in 2023 to ₹3,375 crore by 2026, further cementing the importance of influencers in India’s economic future.
