Indian equity markets will remain closed on Friday, October 2, as the country observes Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) have suspended trading across equity, derivatives and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments.
The holiday comes just before the weekend, giving investors three consecutive days without domestic stock market trading. The BSE and NSE will resume normal trading on Monday, October 5.
According to the official market holiday calendar, Indian exchanges have two scheduled trading holidays in October.
Markets will remain closed on October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti and October 20 for Dussehra. The remaining scheduled market holidays in 2026 include Diwali-Balipratipada on November 10, Prakash Gurpurb on November 24 and Christmas on December 25.
The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will also remain closed during both its morning and evening trading sessions on Friday.
Meanwhile, Indian benchmark indices ended lower for the fourth consecutive session on Thursday.
Continued foreign fund outflows, elevated bond yields and rising crude oil prices put pressure on the domestic market.
The Sensex dropped 570.59 points, or 0.79 per cent, to close at 71,909.70. During the session, the index fell as much as 1,187.41 points, or 1.63 per cent, to touch 71,292.88.
The Nifty also fell 198.50 points, or 0.88 per cent, to 22,421.95.
Market experts said the overall trend remained weak, although oversold technical indicators could support a short-term rebound.
They added that investors would closely monitor whether any recovery attracts sustained buying when trading resumes.
