India has successfully conducted flight trials of a cutting-edge naval anti-ship missile, the NASM-SR, which features unique ‘Man-in-Loop’ capabilities, allowing for inflight retargeting. The trials took place at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur on Tuesday and demonstrated the missile’s advanced capabilities in real-world conditions.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Navy, and the industry partners for their role in the successful trials.
The missile, launched from a naval helicopter, showed impressive results against ship targets, marking a significant achievement for India’s defence technology.
The missile is equipped with an indigenous imaging infra-red seeker for terminal guidance, enhancing its accuracy in targeting. In addition, the missile demonstrated a high-bandwidth two-way datalink system, which allows live transmission of the seeker’s images back to the pilot for real-time retargeting.

This capability is a crucial advancement in naval warfare, offering enhanced operational flexibility.
During the trials, the missile launch in ‘Bearing-only Lock-on’ after launch mode, with multiple targets in close proximity. This allowed the missile to select a target among them, showcasing its precision and versatility.
The flight trials also validated the missile’s ‘Man-in-Loop’ feature, which enables the pilot to adjust the missile’s trajectory during flight. In a remarkable demonstration, the missile scored a direct hit on a small ship target while flying at sea-skimming mode, achieving its maximum range.
This successful flight test highlights India’s growing capabilities in advanced missile technology and strengthens its naval defence systems. The NASM-SR missile, with its unique ‘Man-in-Loop’ feature, sets a new standard for naval anti-ship missiles, making it a significant asset for India’s defence forces.
