Gujarat’s IT sector is expanding rapidly, with exports more than doubling from ₹3,570 crore in FY 2019-20 to ₹8,703 crore in FY 2023-24, according to Nasscom data presented in Parliament.
Figures from the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) show that Gujarat, once a latecomer in India’s IT boom, is now making steady progress.
Experts attribute this growth to digital transformation, SME expansion, and government policies promoting IT parks and data centers.
“Gujarat’s IT exports have surged due to digital adoption and business expansion. This data only covers STPI-registered companies. The actual exports are much higher,” said Tejinder Oberoi, past chairman of GESIA IT Association.
He added that Gujarat’s IT/ITeS and Global Capability Centre (GCC) policies will further boost exports and investments.
Despite this growth, Gujarat lags behind Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana. Karnataka leads with ₹4.09 lakh crore in IT exports, followed by Maharashtra at ₹1.83 lakh crore and Telangana at ₹1.21 lakh crore.
Gujarat has a long way to go to compete with these giants.
Industry leaders credit the post-pandemic digital shift, improved infrastructure, and a business-friendly climate for Gujarat’s rise.
Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar are emerging as IT hubs, attracting global firms and startups. However, experts stress that talent development is crucial for sustaining this momentum.
“Gujarat’s talent pool is growing, with top institutions producing skilled engineers. Competitive salaries and quality living standards give Gujarat an edge,” said Pankaj Kotak, Gujarat head of Raheja Group.
Though Gujarat missed the late ’90s IT boom, it is fast-tracking its way up. With the right policies and a strong talent pipeline, the state could soon become a formidable IT player.
