On Tuesday, Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, launched several initiatives to bolster consumer protection in India. These include the AI-enabled National Consumer Helpline and tools to identify deceptive marketing practices.
The initiatives aim to provide consumers with more robust safeguards in the increasingly digital landscape. Joshi further said, “Significant progress has been made in expediting resolutions of consumer disputes.”
He pointed out that from January to November this year, a total of 6,587 cases had been disposed of through India’s three-tier consumer court system, covering district, state, and national levels.
The government has also expanded the reach of the e-Daakhil Portal, launched in 2020, to allow consumers to file complaints online.
By June 2023, the portal had achieved 100% adoption in states like Karnataka, Punjab, and Rajasthan, as well as in several districts.
This digital platform aims to make the consumer grievance redressal system more efficient and accessible.
Addressing the growing concerns in the e-commerce sector, Minister Joshi stressed the importance of balancing digital growth with consumer protection.
“While this digital revolution offers incredible opportunities, the Indian government believes it is equally important for our consumers to feel confident and make informed choices,” he added.
In line with this, the Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) is drafting new guidelines to regulate surrogate advertising. The CCPA has already issued notices to 13 companies for failing to comply with existing rules.
With these new initiatives, the government is taking steps to ensure that consumers are better protected in the marketplace. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, these measures are aimed at providing consumers with confidence.
