Government Achieves Milestone With 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras Ahead Of Deadline

The Government proudly announced the completion of its target to establish 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) across India, two months ahead of the March 2025 deadline.

This initiative, under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), aims to provide affordable, high-quality medicines to the public, benefiting millions across the country.

A total of 15,057 JAKs were operational, marking a significant achievement in the Government’s commitment to improving healthcare accessibility.

Target Expansion

The Government is now setting its sights on further expanding this network.

The government plans to increase the number of JAKs to 20,000 by March 2026, with a final target of 25,000 by March 2027.

This expansion is part of the broader strategy to enhance healthcare access and self-reliance, particularly in remote areas, through the opening of JAKs at the block and district levels.

These centers, established through a franchise-like model, are primarily operated by individual entrepreneurs, NGOs, and private firms.

Affordable Medicines

The scheme’s medicine basket, comprising over 2,000 formulations and 300 surgical products, covers essential therapeutic areas like cardiovascular health, diabetes, oncology, and gastrointestinal care.

The products are priced between 50% to 80% lower than their branded counterparts, ensuring affordability for the masses.

The Government aims to increase the product basket further by adding 100 more medicines and 10 more surgical products by March 2025.

Efficient Supply Chain and Distribution

To support efficient distribution, the Government has implemented a centralized IT-enabled system, ensuring steady supplies through one central warehouse in Gurugram and four regional hubs.

This system, coupled with 36 distributors and an incentive-based stocking mechanism, guarantees the availability of essential medicines across the country.

The impact of Jan Aushadhi Kendras has been considerable, with medicines worth ₹6,975 crore sold in the last 10 years.

This has resulted in estimated savings of approximately ₹30,000 crore for citizens compared to branded medicines.

In the financial year 2024-25 alone, JAKs sold medicines worth ₹1,767 crore, reflecting a 33% increase from the previous year.

The scheme continues to make a tangible difference in people’s lives, with an average of 10 to 12 lakh people visiting JAKs daily to avail affordable, quality medicines.

The Government’s continued success in expanding the Jan Aushadhi Kendras network highlights its commitment to making healthcare more accessible and affordable to every Indian citizen.

By leveraging indigenous manufacturing and strengthening the distribution chain, the PMBJP is revolutionizing healthcare accessibility, and with future targets in place, India is on track to further enhance its healthcare system for years to come.
