Union Cabinet Approves Rs 37K Crore Subsidy For Fertilizers To Aid Farmers In Kharif Season

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a Rs 37,216.15 crore proposal to provide subsidized fertilizers at affordable prices to farmers during the Kharif season, which runs from April 1 to September 30.

The subsidy aims to support farmers across the country by ensuring the smooth availability of fertilizers, which are crucial for their agricultural activities during this period.

Increased Budget For Subsidy For Fertilizers

The government has allocated approximately Rs 13,000 crore more for the Kharif season subsidy compared to the corresponding figure for the Rabi season of 2024-25.

According to the official statement issued after the Cabinet meeting, this increase highlights the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector.

Subsidy On Phosphatic And Potassic Fertilizers

The government will provide subsidies on phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilizers, including NPKS grades, based on approved rates for Kharif 2025, which will apply from April 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025.

The goal is to ensure that these essential fertilizers are available to farmers at reasonable prices, thus promoting sustainable farming practices.

The subsidy will be provided to fertilizer companies based on the notified rates to ensure fertilizers are made available to farmers at affordable prices.

Through this measure, the government aims to ensure the availability of 28 grades of P&K fertilizers to farmers through fertilizer manufacturers and importers.

Farmer-friendly Approach To Fertilizer Availability

The government’s approach remains farmer-friendly, ensuring that fertilizers remain accessible even in light of the recent fluctuations in international fertilizer prices.

The subsidy will be governed by the Nutrient-Based Scheme (NBS) of the Department of Fertilizers, which has been in effect since April 1, 2010.

In a further move to benefit farmers, the government has extended the freight subsidy on Single Super Phosphate (SSP) for Kharif 2025.

This will provide additional support to farmers in accessing the required fertilizers for their crops.

Government’s Commitment To Food Security And Healthy Harvests

The subsidy on P&K fertilizers is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure that farmers receive essential nutrients at fair prices, promoting healthy soils and ensuring food security for the nation.

The approval of the subsidy rates for notified P&K fertilizers underscores the government’s focus on the agriculture sector and its commitment to supporting Indian farmers.

With this decision, the government aims to safeguard the agricultural sector’s growth while ensuring that farmers can continue to produce a healthy and abundant harvest, securing the nation’s food supply for the coming seasons.
