Elon Musk Slams Trump-Backed Spending Bill; Warns Of Soaring Deficit

Elon Musk, former head of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has broken away from President Donald Trump’s stance on the administration’s newly passed spending legislation, which President Trump has dubbed the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’.

Posting on the social media platform, Musk condemned the bill, calling it ‘a massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill’. He also described it as ‘a disgusting abomination’.

He directly criticised lawmakers who backed the legislation, stating, “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong.”

Taking to X, Musk posted, “I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

The White House, however, dismissed Musk’s remarks.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a briefing, “The President already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill. It doesn’t change the President’s opinion. This is one big beautiful bill, and he is sticking to it.”

Musk’s disapproval extended beyond his social media post.

In an interview with CBS News, he warned that the bill would ‘massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion’ and accused Congress of ‘making America bankrupt’.

Musk had earlier voiced disappointment with the bill, reflecting on his time at DOGE. He said it undermined efforts to reduce wasteful spending.

“I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both,” he remarked during the CBS interview.

The legislation has drawn widespread criticism. Republican fiscal conservatives argue it could push the country toward bankruptcy, while independent analysts have projected a possible $4 trillion deficit increase over the next ten years.

At a press conference on Friday, Trump defended the bill, calling it ‘an unbelievable bill’ that ‘cuts your deficits’. He also noted he would prefer ‘a bigger cut in taxes’.

Although Musk attended the event, he remained silent on the issue at the time.
