Dharavi Redevelopment Project To Focus On Skill Development, Cultural Growth

The Dharavi redevelopment project in Mumbai is likely to enter a new phase, with a focus on skill development and cultural engagement.

Dr Mahendra P Kalyankar, Chief Executive Officer of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), highlighted the roadmap for upcoming initiatives aimed at transforming one of Asia’s largest informal settlements.

A central component of the redevelopment plan is the introduction of structured skill development programmes for Dharavi residents.

These initiatives will likely enhance employability and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities. They aim to ensure that local communities directly benefit from the redevelopment process.

Speaking about the project, Dr Kalyankar stated, “The Dharavi project for skill development of the residents will also be undertaken.”

The move reflects a broader emphasis on inclusive growth and long-term economic empowerment.

The SRA plans to establish a Dharavi Experience Centre ahead of 15 August. The aim is to showcase the area’s unique cultural and entrepreneurial spirit.

The centre is likely to serve as a hub for visitors. It will offer insights into Dharavi’s transformation journey as well as its vibrant community life.

Dr Kalyankar confirmed the timeline, saying, “The Dharavi Experience Centre will be established before 15th August. The master plan is ready. We are definitely moving forward.”

With the master plan already finalised, authorities are gearing up for phased implementation.

The redevelopment project forms part of a larger vision that aligns with India’s developmental goals leading up to 2047, which will mark 100 years of independence.

Highlighting the long-term outlook, Dr Kalyankar added, “By 2047, with a developed Maharashtra and a developed India, we will surely gallop ahead.”

The Dharavi redevelopment initiative represents a significant step towards urban renewal in Maharashtra.

By combining infrastructure upgrades with skill-building efforts, the project also aims to create a sustainable and inclusive model of development, positioning Dharavi as a symbol of transformation in modern urban India.
