US Secretary Marco Rubio Meets PM Modi During Four-Day India Visit

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon after arriving in New Delhi, marking a significant diplomatic engagement.

During the interaction, Rubio passed on an invitation from US President Donald Trump, inviting PM Modi to visit the White House in the near future.

After the meeting, PM Modi reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to continued cooperation.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Happy to receive the US Secretary of State, Mr. Marco Rubio. We discussed sustained progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and issues related to regional and global peace and security. India and the United States will continue to work closely for the global good.”

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the engagement as meaningful and forward-looking.

“Great to join @SecRubio for a meeting with Prime Minister @narendramodi. We had a productive discussion on ways to deepen U.S.-India cooperation across security, trade, and critical technologies – areas that strengthen both our nations and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific. India is a vital partner to the United States!” he posted on X.

In a separate post, Sergio Gor posted, “News! Secretary Marco Rubio extended an invite on behalf of President Donald Trump, for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House in the near future!”

Rubio earlier landed in Kolkata, commencing his four-day tour of India. He was welcomed by Ambassador Gor at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

Accompanied by his wife, Jeanette Rubio, he visited Mother House, the headquarters of Saint Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity.

Sharing an update after arrival, Gor stated, “Secretary Marco Rubio has landed in Kolkata. This is his first trip to India. Later today, we will call on Prime Minister @narendramodi in New Delhi. Trade, Technology, Defense, QUAD, and many other items to discuss and advance over the next few days!”

Rubio is the first US Secretary of State to travel to Kolkata since Hillary Clinton’s visit in May 2012.

Rubio’s itinerary from May 23 to 26 includes Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi, and is being seen as diplomatically important.

The visit gains added significance due to discussions on energy cooperation and participation in Quad-related engagements.

India will host the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 26, with leaders from Australia and Japan also attending.

Before arriving in India, Rubio emphasised Washington’s intent to strengthen ties with New Delhi. He described India as a ‘great ally’ and a ‘great partner’ during global supply challenges.

The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit will likely reinforce the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. It added that the visit could open new avenues for cooperation.
