Argentina Eyes Stronger Ties With India, Focuses On LNG And Lithium Cooperation

India is poised to become the “engine of the world” over the next decade, driven by its rapid economic growth and large population, according to Horacio Marin, Chairman and CEO of Argentina’s leading oil and gas company, YPF. In an interview with ANI, Marin emphasized India’s immense potential and highlighted the country’s growing demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG), which Argentina is ready to supply.

Marin revealed that the purpose of his visit to India was to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that would deepen cooperation between both nations. He explained, “The main aim of this collaboration is that YPF and Argentina want to sell LNG, and India is also interested in lithium.

This offers us a great opportunity to strike a mutually beneficial deal.” He further noted, “India is going to be the engineer of the world for the next decade due to its excellent growth and large population. The country will require substantial LNG supplies, and we can be a reliable supplier for India.”

Bilateral Relations Built On Shared Values

Echoing Marin’s sentiments, Argentina’s Ambassador to India, Mariano Caucino, expressed optimism about the future of the bilateral relationship between the two countries. He pointed out that 2024 marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Argentina and India, which have been built on a foundation of shared values and mutual respect. “Our friendship is based on common values, and we have developed a very strong trade relationship despite the geographical distance and cultural differences,” Caucino said.

The collaboration between Argentina and India is not limited to LNG. It also extends to lithium, an essential resource for India’s rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) and renewable energy sectors. In January 2024, India signed an agreement with Argentina for a lithium exploration and mining project, further strengthening the economic ties between the two nations.

As both countries continue to explore new avenues for cooperation, the partnership holds great promise, particularly in energy and sustainable technologies. With Argentina positioning itself as a key supplier of both LNG and lithium, the bilateral trade relationship is set to evolve, benefiting both nations in the years to come.
