Xi Jinping, Peng Liyuan Welcome PM Modi At SCO Summit Reception

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, received Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday as he attended the formal reception for leaders at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.

PM Modi greeted Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan with a handshake, after which the three posed for photographs.

He then joined fellow heads of state and government for the traditional group picture.

The SCO, created in Shanghai on 15 June 2001, is a permanent intergovernmental body. Its current members are China, Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus. Afghanistan and Mongolia hold observer status, while 14 countries, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Nepal and Sri Lanka, are dialogue partners.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi and Xi held bilateral discussions in Tianjin. Both sides underlined the importance of maintaining stability along the border and reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation grounded in mutual respect, mutual interest and sensitivity.

After the meeting, taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Had a fruitful meeting with President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. We reviewed the positive momentum in India-China relations since our last meeting in Kazan. We agreed on the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in border areas and reaffirmed our commitment to cooperation based on mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity.”

Other Key Bilateral Meetings

The Prime Minister also spoke with Cai Qi, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, focusing on political, economic and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi met several other leaders, including Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu.

PM Modi arrived in Tianjin on Saturday from Tokyo, where he had concluded an official visit. He received a ceremonial welcome at Binhai International Airport ahead of the two-day SCO gathering.
