Whale Strikes Boat Off Australia, Killing 1 And Injuring Another

On Saturday morning, a whale struck a boat off the coast of eastern Australia, killing one man and wounding another.

According to authorities, the two men were on the boat when it was hit and flipped around 6 a.m. local time (2000 GMT) in the waters off La Perouse, 14 kilometres (nine miles) southeast of Sydney.

The first man was retrieved unconscious from the water and died on the spot. The second was treated by paramedics and is in hospital in stable condition.

The collision was described as a tragic accident by Water Police acting superintendent Siobhan Munro.

She claimed the whale breached near or on the little run-about boat.

“Right now there are lots of whales out there and there are lots of examples of whales breaching next to boats”, she said.

It comes less than two weeks after a boat propeller struck the head of a four-metre humpback whale off the coast of Western Australia.
