Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on Thursday that Moscow was considering mounting a terror attack on the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.
President Volodymyr Zelensky tweeted, “We have just had a report from our intelligence and the Security Service of 🇺🇦. Intelligence has received information that Russia is considering a scenario of a terrorist attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. A terrorist attack with radiation leakage. They have prepared everything for this”, through his official Twitter handle.
“Unfortunately, I have repeatedly had to remind that radiation has no state borders, and who it will hit is determined only by the wind direction”, he continued in his tweet.
He went on to say, “We share all available information with our partners – everyone in the world. All the evidence. Europe, America, China, Brazil, India, the Arab world, Africa – all countries, absolutely everyone should know this. International organizations. Everyone”.
“There should never be any terrorist attacks on nuclear power plants anywhere. This time it should not be like with Kakhovka – the world has been warned, so the world can and must act”, he added in his tweet.
Fears about Europe’s largest nuclear plant, which have remained throughout Moscow’s Ukraine offensive, have been increased by the loss of a dam that provided the cooling water for the plant.
The Kremlin dismissed Mr. Zelensky’s assertions that Russian forces were directing a radioactive leak, citing a recent visit to the plant by the head of the UN’s nuclear agency.
Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman said, “This is another lie. There were just contacts with the IAEA at the site, a very high assessment from the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency). They saw everything, everything they wanted to see”.
Meanwhile, Moscow announced on Thursday that UN nuclear chief Rafael Grossi would be visiting the Russian territory of Kaliningrad to meet with the head of Russia’s nuclear agency.
