The United States has announced that the suspension of student visa interviews will end ‘sooner than later’, urging applicants to continue their visa application process and regularly check for updates on the resumption of services.
On Tuesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio directed US missions worldwide to temporarily halt student visa interviews.
US officials introduced the pause to enhance scrutiny of applicants’ social media activity as part of the expanded security measures.
US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce indicated that an early conclusion to the pause would ease the concerns of hundreds of thousands of students planning to study in the US later this year.

India, which sends the largest number of international students to the US, will be particularly attentive to Bruce’s comments.
Bruce advised applicants to remain patient but proactive.
“There might be some delay,” she said during the daily news briefing.
“I encourage people to regularly check to see when those spaces open. If you’ve applied for a visa and can’t get an appointment, please keep rechecking the online system to see when spots become available.”
She added, “I can’t give an exact timeline, but it will happen, perhaps sooner than later.”
The Trump administration intensified its scrutiny of foreign students amid political unrest on US campuses.
Protests against Israel’s invasion of Gaza, following a terrorist attack by Hamas in October 2023, sparked this unrest.
The administration has criticised college authorities for failing to prevent these protests and protect Jewish and international students from involvement, prompting the implementation of more rigorous visa application checks.
