US Restricts Unauthorised Drone Flights Along Mexico Border Over Security Risks

The United States has imposed temporary restrictions on unauthorised drone flights along its southern border with Mexico, citing security concerns and risks to federal personnel and facilities.

The departments of Transportation, Homeland Security and War announced on Friday that the temporary flight restriction had taken effect.

The measure prohibits unauthorised drone operations up to 400 feet above ground level within an area extending one nautical mile north of the international boundary.

The restrictions aim to protect sensitive border security operations and improve enforcement against operators who violate airspace rules.

Authorities said the measure forms part of broader efforts to address threats associated with cartel activities and cross-border criminal networks.

The announcement comes amid concerns over the use of unmanned aircraft for smuggling and other illicit activities.

The agencies did not provide figures on recent unauthorised drone detections or establish that all such flights had links to criminal organisations.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which operates under the Transportation Department, oversees civil airspace management.

The involvement of Homeland Security and the War Department highlights the law enforcement and national security dimensions of the restrictions.

Officials said the measure would support ongoing border operations by limiting unauthorised flights near sensitive areas.

Drone operators must obtain appropriate authorisation before flying within the restricted zone.

The growing availability of inexpensive drones has created new challenges for law enforcement and military agencies.

While businesses, recreational users and public safety organisations use drones for legitimate purposes, unauthorised flights near government facilities can pose security risks.

The United States and Mexico share a land border spanning approximately 2,000 miles.

The latest restrictions add to federal efforts to manage low-altitude airspace. They further address aviation safety, border enforcement and national security concerns.
