US President Trump Warns Of Fresh Tariffs On EU After Record Google Penalty

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs on the European Union following Brussels’ decision to fine Google €2.95 billion (£2.5 billion) for breaching competition rules in its advertising technology business.

Writing on his Truth Social platform shortly after the European Commission announced its ruling, US President Trump accused the EU of ‘hitting another great American company’ and ‘taking money that would otherwise go to American investments and jobs’.

He said his administration would ‘not allow these discriminatory actions to stand’ and pledged to initiate a Section 301 trade investigation aimed at nullifying what he called ‘unfair penalties’ on US firms.

The threatened move comes despite a tentative trade framework reached between Washington and Brussels earlier this summer.

Analysts warn that renewed tariff measures could unsettle already fragile negotiations on a long-term deal.

Fourth Multibillion-Euro Fine

The European Commission said Google had abused its dominant position by favouring its own ad exchanges over rivals, harming publishers, advertisers and consumers.

It ordered the company to cease the practices. The ruling marks the fourth multibillion-euro sanction imposed on Google in a decade-long antitrust battle with Brussels.

Teresa Ribera, the EU’s top antitrust official, said the decision shows that Google abused its dominant position in ad tech. Google has vowed to appeal.

Trump claimed on social media that Google had already paid $13 billion in ‘false claims and charges’ to the EU in the past, adding up to a total of $16.5 billion.

“ How crazy is that? The European Union must stop this practice against American Companies, IMMEDIATELY!” he wrote.

A US investigation could directly weaken the EU as member states remain divided over the new trade framework.

European leaders have expressed mixed views on the arrangement, and a comprehensive agreement with Washington remains uncertain.
