President Donald Trump has announced that the 2026 G20 Summit will be held at his Trump National Doral golf resort in southern Florida and indicated that he would be pleased to see Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping attend as observers.
Speaking in the Oval Office, US President Trump said the event would mark a milestone for the United States as it celebrates its 250th anniversary next year.
“It’s the first time in nearly 20 years that we will host the G20 summit here in America,” he told reporters.
He cited the venue’s proximity to Miami International Airport and called it a ‘beautiful’ setting, insisting he chose it for practical reasons.
The announcement echoes his 2019 attempt to bring the G7 to the same property, a plan he abandoned after accusations of personal profit.
Donald Trump emphasised there would be ‘no money in it’ for him, adding that the focus was on staging a successful summit.
When asked about attendance from Russia and China, the President replied, “I’d love them to, if they want to, they’d be observers.”
Since Russia invaded Ukraine, Putin has sent Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to G20 meetings instead of appearing personally. Xi attended last year’s summit in Brazil.
US President Trump also confirmed he will not attend the November G20 summit in Johannesburg, handing the role to Vice President JD Vance. He cited numerous problems in South Africa as the reason for his absence.
Earlier this year, he suspended aid to the country over alleged discrimination against White farmers and pledged to support Afrikaner resettlement.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio likewise said he would not attend the Johannesburg meeting of G20 foreign ministers, criticising South Africa’s policies.
