US President Donald Trump Weighs NATO Exit After Iran Rift

US President Donald Trump is evaluating a potential withdrawal of the United States from NATO following the Iran conflict.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reinforced this stance, stating Washington may reassess its commitment to the alliance amid escalating friction with European partners.

In an interview, Rubio questioned NATO’s strategic value if allies restrict US military operations. He criticised member nations for denying access to bases during the conflict.

Rubio warned that such limitations could reduce the alliance to a ‘one-sided arrangement’.

Trump adopted a firmer tone. In an interaction, he described NATO as ineffective and indicated that withdrawal remains a serious consideration.

The US President argued that the allied reluctance to support US operations against Iran exposed structural weaknesses.

The administration also criticised European nations for declining to assist in securing the Strait of Hormuz. This vital maritime corridor remains central to global energy flows.

Washington expressed frustration over the limited naval support from its partners.

Rubio linked the dispute to broader military developments. He stated that US forces are progressing steadily in weakening Iran’s air force, navy, missile systems, and defence production facilities.

The US Secretary of State added that the campaign is nearing its strategic objectives and could significantly limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

European leaders have responded cautiously.

Keir Starmer reaffirmed NATO’s importance, calling it the most effective military alliance globally. He also clarified that the United Kingdom would not participate in the Iran conflict.

Founded in 1949, NATO remains central to transatlantic security. Its collective defence clause applies only to direct attacks on member states, not external conflicts such as the Iran war.
