US Navy Fighter Jet Crashes In San Diego, Killing Pilot

US Marine Corps stated that the pilot of a US Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet that crashed on Thursday night near San Diego has been confirmed deceased. The only person aboard the plane was the pilot.

The pilot was found dead at the location by search and rescue teams dispatched after the crash, according to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina.

“With a heavy heart”, the statement stated, “our condolences go to Marine’s family during this time”.

The identity of the service member will not be disclosed until 24 hours after all next-of-kin notifications have been completed, according to the Marines.

“The crash site is on US government land near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and there are no indications of damage to property on the ground”, the Marines stated earlier Friday. According to the Marines, an inquiry into the collision has commenced.

As per Naval Air Systems Command, the F/A-18 Hornet is the nation’s first all-weather fighter and attack aircraft, and it is known as the workhorse of Marine Corps tactical aviation.
