US Military Says 42 Vessels Intercepted In Iran-Linked Naval Blockade

The United States military says it has intercepted 42 commercial vessels while enforcing a naval blockade aimed at restricting maritime trade linked to Iran.

According to US Central Command, the latest interception marks a key point in the operation. Commander Brad Cooper stated that the most recent vessel was redirected after attempting to pass through restricted routes connected to Iranian ports.

US officials said that 41 oil tankers remain stalled due to the blockade, carrying an estimated 69 million barrels of crude. The cargo is valued at more than $6 billion, a figure the US claims reflects lost revenue for Iran’s oil sector.

Washington maintains that the blockade is being strictly enforced and remains central to its broader strategy in the region.

Iran has strongly criticised the move, describing it as unlawful and accusing the US of engaging in maritime aggression.

The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said its forces did not intervene during earlier incidents. This was because families of crew members were reportedly on board the vessels.

State broadcaster Press TV quoted senior officials warning that continued enforcement of the blockade could trigger a military response. Iranian sources have indicated that further escalation is possible if the restrictions are not lifted.

The situation centres on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil shipments. The US has imposed limits on vessels travelling to and from Iranian ports in this area.

The blockade was introduced following recent talks between the United States and Iran. Held in Islamabad on 11 and 12 April, the discussions failed to produce an agreement. The outcome added to existing tensions between the two countries.
