The United States launched a new wave of military strikes against Iran on Thursday, targeting capabilities it said were being used to threaten vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
The operations marked the second round of attacks within a day as tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to escalate.
According to the US Central Command, American forces carried out the latest strikes at 03:00 PM Eastern Time, focusing on Iranian military assets linked to operations in and around the strategic waterway.
Earlier, US forces carried out a 90-minute operation targeting coastal defence systems and missile sites on Greater Tunb Island.
The strikes followed a seven-hour US offensive on Tuesday that hit dozens of Iranian missile, drone, naval and coastal defence targets near the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) claimed it had launched retaliatory strikes against US military installations in Bahrain and Jordan.
Iranian state media said the IRGC’s Aerospace Force struck the US military base at al-Azraq in Jordan, targeting aircraft shelters and drones.
The IRGC also claimed US forces launched attacks on Iran from bases in Jordan and urged Jordanians to oppose the American military presence.
Separately, the IRGC said its naval forces attacked facilities linked to the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, calling the strikes a response to the US naval deployment and blockade of Iranian ports near the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest exchange of strikes underscores the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the Middle East, with both sides intensifying military operations that could further disrupt regional stability and international maritime trade through one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.
