On Wednesday, a US Air Force plane carrying Indian citizens, who were allegedly residing illegally in the United States, landed in Amritsar, Punjab.
This deportation flight marks part of a broader crackdown by the United States on illegal immigration.
Earlier this week, a spokesperson for the US Embassy in India confirmed the flight, while emphasizing that the US government is actively enforcing its immigration laws.
Although the spokesperson did not provide specific details regarding the deportation, they reiterated that such actions send a clear message against illegal migration.
“I have received numerous inquiries about the deportation flight to India. While I cannot share the specifics, I can confirm that the US is enforcing its border laws, tightening immigration regulations, and removing illegal migrants,” the spokesperson stated.
“These actions highlight that illegal migration is not worth the risk.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India had earlier indicated its stance on facilitating the return of Indian nationals overstaying or residing without proper documentation abroad.
On January 24, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India opposes illegal immigration, particularly because it is often linked to organized crime.
“For Indian nationals, whether in the United States or any other country, if they are overstaying or living without proper documentation, we will assist in their return once their nationality is verified.
We will facilitate their repatriation to India, provided we receive the necessary documentation,” Jaiswal affirmed.
The deportation of Indian nationals has sparked political controversy in India, with the opposition Congress party condemning how the US has treated its citizens. Congress MP Manickam Tagore expressed outrage over the treatment of deportees, accusing the US of treating Indian nationals like criminals.
“Shocking & shameful! The way the US is deporting Indians—chained like criminals—is inhumane & unacceptable. Why is PM Modi silent? Where is our self-respect? Dr. S. Jaishankar, what are you doing to stop this humiliation of our people? Speak up & act now,” Tagore posted on social media.
