The United States administration has approved arms sales exceeding $8.6 billion to Israel, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, moving ahead without congressional review.
According to the United States Department of State, the package includes precision-guided weapon systems, support for air and missile defence capabilities, and an integrated battle command platform.
In a separate development, US President Donald Trump informed lawmakers that US military operations against Iran have formally ended, stating that the campaign has concluded in line with legal timelines.
In a letter to Congress, he said there had been no exchange of fire since April 7, 2026, and confirmed that hostilities which began on February 28, 2026, had now ceased.
The announcement comes as the administration faces scrutiny over initiating military action without prior approval from Congress.
The War Powers Resolution requires the President to end such operations within 60 days of notifying lawmakers unless it grants authorisation. The timeline for the current conflict expired at the start of May.
Reports suggest the declaration intends to ease tensions in Washington over the legal basis of the military engagement.
Despite the formal end of hostilities, Trump indicated that diplomatic efforts with Iran remain unresolved. Before boarding Marine One, he said he remained dissatisfied with the proposals currently under discussion.
The US President described Iran’s leadership as divided and lacking cohesion, suggesting internal disagreements were complicating negotiations and weakening Tehran’s position.
Trump also claimed that Iran’s military strength had been significantly reduced during the conflict, stating that its naval and air capabilities were limited.
While maintaining a firm stance, the US President said a negotiated settlement would be preferable on humanitarian grounds. He further emphasised that the option of renewed military action remains available if talks fail, presenting a choice between continued diplomacy and escalation.
