UK Announces Rs 1 Crore Funding To Deal With ‘Khalistani Extremism’

In order to strengthen India-UK security collaboration, UK security minister Tom Tugendhat announced new financing of £95,000 (almost Rs 1 crore) during a visit to Delhi to combat extremism associated with Khalistan in the UK.
Tugendhat revealed the new funding injection to strengthen the UK’s capabilities to combat pro-Khalistan extremism during a meeting with external affairs minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi on Thursday. The statement comes as negotiations for a bilateral FTA between the UK and India are nearing their conclusion.

Tackling extremism

The £95,000 investment will complement the work already being done between the UK and India through the joint extremism task force, which aims to enhance cooperation on tackling extremism and ensure that “all possible actions” are taken against groups and individuals seeking to incite violent extremism, by improving the UK government’s understanding of the threat posed by pro-Khalistan extremism and increasing its ability to identify and disrupt extremist narratives and activity.

Prior to departing on Saturday for the G20 anti-corruption discussions in Kolkata, Tugendhat, who is in India for a three-day visit, met with national security adviser Ajit Doval in New Delhi on Friday.
“A deeper partnership between our two countries means we can more successfully combat the security threats we both face,” said Tugendhat. I’m dedicated to cooperating with you to improve our knowledge of and ability to combat extremism in all of its forms.

Tugendhat also met with the CBI in Delhi to talk about the common problems that fraud and child sex abuse present.
“The unique connection between our people brings both enormous opportunities and security challenges,” British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis remarked. To protect our people, we are working together to confront threats like pro-Khalistan extremism and migration.

The UK government is still “committed to working with the government of India following the unacceptable attack against the India High Commission in London in March 2023,” according to the British High Commission in New Delhi.

“Our strong and enduring friendship is reflected in the living bridge between India and the UK. We have numerous opportunities to work together to make the world a better and wealthier place since we are the biggest and oldest democracies in the world, Tugendhat remarked.

We can better address the security issues we both confront if our two countries had a stronger collaboration. I’m committed to teaming up with you to strengthen our knowledge of and defenses against extremism, in whatever manner it may manifest itself.

The minister expressed his happiness at being invited to the G-20 summit.

“Corruption also undermines our society, hurts our security, and harms our prosperity. I am honored to be present at the G20 anti-corruption ministerial meeting, which is being chaired by India, in order to further boost global resilience and take action against its destructive influence, he said.
Tugendhat is set to visit the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) headquarters before departing for Kolkata, where the G20 summit will be held on Saturday, to discuss shared difficulties brought on by fraud and child sexual exploitation. According to the high commission, he will also meet with Ajit Doval, the national security adviser.
