Typhoon Gaemi in China Affects Over 6,20,000

Gaemi, the third typhoon of the year, has affected some 6,28,600 people in the Fujian Province in east China; thus far, about 2,90,000 residents have been relocated, according to local authorities.

The typhoon made its second landfall in the country on Thursday evening at Xiuyu District in the city of Putian, Fujian, with a maximum wind speed of 118.8 km/h at its center, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Its center was in Sanming, in Youxi County, at six in the morning on Friday. Winds as high as 100.8 km/h were recorded close to the center.

The typhoon is predicted to gradually lose strength as it moves northwest at a speed of roughly 20 km/h and is predicted to arrive near Jiangxi Province late on Friday.

According to local meteorological authorities, 72 townships in 15 county-level areas across Fujian saw an accumulated precipitation of more than 250 millimeters during the typhoon’s impact, and 12 townships in nine county-level areas saw an accumulated precipitation of over 400 millimeters, with the highest amount reaching 512.8 millimeters.

Around midnight on Thursday, Gaemi made ashore for the first time in Yilan County, eastern Taiwan; according to local officials, it left 201 people injured and two dead.
