Trump Welfare Data Highlights Immigrant Usage; India Absent From Rankings

Data tables posted by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social detailing welfare usage among immigrant households by country of origin have sparked discussion in Washington, particularly because India does not feature in the rankings.

The omission has been viewed as indicative of the distinctive economic characteristics of Indian immigrants within the wider US immigration picture.

Overview of the Welfare Dataset

The information appears across separate tables that together form a single dataset. It measures the proportion of immigrant households in the United States that receive government assistance, with figures ranging from more than 80 per cent at the top end to just below 40 per cent at the lower end.

Bhutan ranks highest, with 81.4 per cent of immigrant households receiving welfare benefits. North Yemen follows at 75.2 per cent, with Somalia at 71.9 per cent and the Marshall Islands at 71.4 per cent, while several other countries also post similarly high levels.

The Dominican Republic and Afghanistan both register welfare participation rates of 68.1 per cent.

Congo records a welfare participation rate of 66 per cent, followed by Guinea at 65.8 per cent and Iraq at 60.7 per cent, with countries from Central America, the Caribbean and Africa prominently represented in this bracket.

Further down the table, Guatemala records a welfare participation rate of 56.5 per cent, followed by Sudan at 56.3 per cent and El Salvador at 55.4 per cent, while Honduras stands at 52.9 per cent. Bangladesh records a rate of 54.8 per cent.

Another page of the dataset includes countries with comparatively lower, though still significant, levels of welfare use.

Ivory Coast leads this group at 49.1 per cent, followed by Liberia at 48.9 per cent and Algeria at 48.1 per cent. Syria is listed at 48 per cent.

Jordan and Libya each stand at 47.8 per cent, Ethiopia at 47.6 per cent, Rwanda at 47.1 per cent and Morocco at 46.6 per cent. Pakistan records a welfare participation rate of 40.2 per cent, while Egypt stands at 39.3 per cent.

India Absent From Rankings

India does not appear anywhere in the data. The absence is notable at a time when immigration and welfare policy continue to be prominent political issues in the United States.

Long-standing public research has consistently shown that Indian immigrants in the US rank among the highest earners across ethnic communities, with strong labour force participation and relatively low reliance on public benefits.

Additional findings from industry and academic studies indicate that Indian immigrants make substantial contributions to the US economy, particularly in sectors such as technology, healthcare and engineering.

They are major contributors to income tax revenues and have played a key role in the creation and growth of a significant number of Silicon Valley start-ups.
