Somnath Temple Reflects 1,000 Years Of India’s Enduring Spirit, Says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the Somnath Temple as a living testament to India’s eternal civilisational strength, asserting that faith and moral conviction ultimately outlast hatred, violence and fanaticism.

Writing in a detailed blog, the Prime Minister reflected on the historical, spiritual and cultural significance of Somnath, situated at Prabhas Patan on Gujarat’s western coast.

He emphasised that the shrine represents far more than a place of worship, calling it a powerful symbol of the Indian soul that has endured repeated assaults over the centuries.

PM Modi noted that the year 2026 will mark 1,000 years since the first recorded attack on the Somnath Temple in January 1026.

Despite the devastation inflicted during that period, he said, the temple’s survival and revival highlight the indomitable spirit of India’s civilisation.

PM Modi observed that historical accounts of the invasion reveal immense cruelty and destruction, deeply affecting the morale of a society that was spiritually rooted and economically prosperous through maritime trade. Yet, he stressed, Somnath’s story is ultimately one of resilience rather than ruin.

The Prime Minister recalled how, time and again, individuals and communities rose to restore the shrine, often at great personal sacrifice.

He paid tribute to figures such as Ahilyabai Holkar for her efforts in temple restoration. He referenced Swami Vivekananda’s reflections on Somnath as a site that reveals India’s history more vividly than volumes of books.

Role of Patel in Post-Independence Rebuilding

PM Modi also highlighted the role of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in rebuilding the temple after Independence.

Patel’s resolve led to the reopening of the restored Somnath Temple on May 11, 1951, in the presence of then-President Dr Rajendra Prasad, marking a major milestone in independent India’s cultural revival.

According to the Prime Minister, Somnath has long been a confluence of diverse traditions and beliefs, drawing saints and scholars from different paths. He added that even today, the temple continues to inspire reflection, inner strength and unity.

Drawing parallels with contemporary India, PM Modi said the nation has emerged stronger after centuries of invasion and colonial exploitation. He argued that India’s cultural values, innovative youth and global contributions, from yoga and Ayurveda to economic growth, reflect the same enduring spirit embodied by Somnath.

Concluding his message, the Prime Minister said that just as Somnath rose repeatedly after destruction, India too is reclaiming its civilisational confidence, moving forward with the resolve to build a developed and inclusive nation.
