Trump Signals Absence At G7; Questions NATO Allies’ Willingness To Defend US

US President Donald Trump announced that he will not attend the emergency Group of Seven summit proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Speaking at a White House press briefing, Trump cited a busy schedule ahead of his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, including meetings related to Greenland.

Trump described Macron as ‘a friend’ but implied that his term in office is limited.

He also questioned whether NATO allies would adequately defend the United States, citing the significant financial contributions America makes to the alliance.

Reiterating the strategic importance of Greenland, Trump stated that the US requires it for national security purposes and left open how far he is willing to go to secure it.

The White House highlighted that Trump’s first 365 days back in office delivered transformative results across multiple areas, including border security, crime reduction, economic revival, energy dominance, and international diplomacy.

The administration claimed credit for reshaping US policy both domestically and abroad, including brokering peace in South Asia, such as the India-Pakistan engagement.

Trump’s statements reflect a focus on assertive foreign policy, national security priorities, and an agenda that emphasises US interests in multilateral forums.

The White House underlined that these actions form part of a broader strategy to advance domestic prosperity and global leadership.

The administration indicated that Trump’s second-term initiatives will continue to prioritise security, economic growth, and international diplomacy, with further executive actions expected throughout the year.
