Trump Pushes For Trilateral Summit With Putin & Zelensky On August 22

US President Donald Trump told European leaders that he aims to hold a trilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on August 22, according to US media reports.

The proposal came after Trump’s recent meeting with Putin in Alaska, where the two leaders spent nearly three hours discussing the Ukraine conflict and bilateral relations. Trump later called Zelensky and European leaders, urging them to support direct talks for a peace deal.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed in an X post on Saturday that he will meet Trump in Washington on Monday.

Trump also invited European leaders to attend the White House meeting, according to Axios.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Saturday that a trilateral summit is expected to follow Monday’s talks between Trump and Zelensky. However, the Kremlin has not yet publicly committed to joining such a meeting.

Reported Peace Proposal

According to US and Russian media reports, Trump floated a potential peace deal during his calls with European leaders.

Under the plan, Ukraine would give up the rest of the Donbass region to Russia, including areas not currently under Russian control.

In exchange, Kyiv and Europe would receive security guarantees and a ceasefire along the current battlefronts.

So far, Ukraine has rejected any suggestion of ceding territory, with President Zelensky stating that no part of the country will be traded away.

Trump and Putin met on August 15 at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Alaska. Their talks included a private discussion in Trump’s limousine, followed by a small-group meeting.

The Russian side included Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, while the American delegation featured Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff.

Putin later told the media that the talks mostly focused on Ukraine. Trump described the summit as ‘very productive’ and said it opened the door for further negotiations.

After speaking with Putin and European leaders, Trump said Ukraine and Russia should aim directly for a final peace deal rather than interim ceasefire agreements.

He further added that if his talks with Zelensky in Washington prove successful, he would seek another round of negotiations with Putin.

As diplomatic efforts intensify, all eyes are now on Washington, where the upcoming Trump–Zelensky meeting could shape the path towards a possible trilateral summit.
