Donald Trump with Volodymyr Zelensky
Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate said Friday that he spoke by phone with Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky, and promised to end the European country’s war with Russia.
“I appreciate President Zelensky for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families”, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Zelensky acknowledged the call. He tweeted, “I spoke with @realDonaldTrump to congratulate him on the Republican nomination and condemn the shocking assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. I wished him strength and absolute safety in the future”, through his official ‘X’ handle.
“I noted the vital bipartisan and bicameral American support for protecting our nation’s freedom and independence”, Zelensky added in his tweet.
He went on to say, “Ukraine will always be grateful to the United States for its help in strengthening our ability to resist Russian terror. Russian attacks on our cities and villages continue every day”.
“We agreed with President Trump to discuss at a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting”, Zelensky added.
A Trump triumph in the November US elections would call into question Washington’s sustained support for Ukraine, which is in its third year of fighting Russian forces.
Trump, who formally accepted the Republican Party’s presidential nomination on Thursday, has often stated he intends to end the war fast but has provided no details on how.
