US President Donald Trump has praised Egypt’s role in regional diplomacy, highlighting progress on Gaza and ongoing pressure on Iran during bilateral talks with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Trump described Egypt as “great” and credited the country with contributing to Middle East stability.
Trump raised concerns over a massive dam in Ethiopia, describing it as one of the largest dams anywhere in the world that basically blocks the Nile River.
He noted that Egypt has relied on the Nile for millennia and described the situation as dangerous, emphasising the need to mediate between Egyptian and Ethiopian leaders.
On the issue of Gaza, Trump reiterated his claim that US involvement had been decisive in maintaining calm.
He acknowledged persistent threats from Hamas and Hezbollah but asserted that the Middle East was “more peaceful than anyone expected.”
He warned armed groups to disarm or face consequences, highlighting the ongoing challenge of securing lasting peace.
Trump repeatedly addressed Iran, claiming that US military action had prevented Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
He stated, “If we didn’t bomb the Iranian nuclear plant, they would have had a nuclear weapon within two months.” He confirmed that sanctions would continue and left open the possibility of further measures if Iran resumed nuclear activity.
The President promoted his proposed Board of Peace, a forum designed to lock in ceasefires and prevent wider conflict.
“We have a lot of great people that want to join,” he said, calling it “the most prestigious board ever formed.” He added that some countries would require parliamentary approval, but most were eager to participate.
Trump’s remarks on Middle East stability carry broader implications, including for India, which relies heavily on energy imports from the region.
Reduced tensions in Gaza and continued pressure on Iran could help stabilise oil markets and shipping routes vital to the global economy.
