Trump Considers Relocating US Troops From Italy Over Iran Tensions

US President Donald Trump has said he is still considering relocating American troops stationed in Italy, according to reports in the Italian media.

During a phone interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Trump claimed that Italy was not there when the United States needed support, referring to tensions linked to the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Trump declined to comment on Iran’s expected response to a US peace proposal, which had been anticipated later on Friday.

His remarks came as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Rome, where he stated that Washington was awaiting Tehran’s response regarding efforts to resolve the conflict.

The comments have triggered reactions from Italian officials, with Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto saying he could not understand the reasoning behind the possible troop relocation. He stressed that Italy continues to work closely with international partners on security operations, including preparations for a mission in the Strait of Hormuz aimed at mine clearance and protecting maritime navigation.

Earlier reports by Italian news agency ANSA suggested that Trump was considering reducing US military presence in both Italy and Spain, while criticising European allies for not offering sufficient support during tensions involving Iran.

The United States stationed around 12,700 troops in Italy at the end of 2025, making it the country with the second-largest American military presence in Europe after Germany.

Trump had earlier signalled plans to further reduce troop levels in Germany and criticised congressional scrutiny of military operations.

His remarks have raised concerns over the future of US military deployments and ties with European allies.
