US President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Iran had reached an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and remove the US naval blockade, describing the development as a major diplomatic breakthrough after months of regional tensions.
In a series of social media posts, Trump said the agreement would restore shipping through one of the world’s most strategically important waterways and help stabilise energy supplies. He authorised the reopening of the Strait and ordered the immediate removal of the US naval blockade, calling on commercial vessels to resume operations.
The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital route for global oil shipments and has remained at the centre of tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Disruptions in the waterway have contributed to volatility in international energy markets and raised concerns about wider regional instability.
Trump described the agreement as a significant step towards peace and security in the Middle East. He said the deal would be formally signed later this week and linked the reopening of the Strait to efforts aimed at clearing mines and ensuring safe navigation for commercial traffic.
While the President hailed the agreement as a historic achievement, the White House did not immediately release details of the arrangement.
The agreement aims to restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and create conditions for further negotiations.
Reports indicate that both sides have agreed to an interim framework that reopens the waterway and lifts the naval blockade, while leaving issues such as Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief for future talks.
Trump described the deal as a major diplomatic achievement that could promote greater stability across the region.
