Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva talks during a press conference at a hotel following the G20 Summit on September 11, 2023, in New Delhi, India.
In a press conference following the G-20 summit on September 10, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said it was very gratifying that an important meeting like the G-20, which Brazil helped to establish, demonstrated the necessity of a multipolar world.
Following the conference, the President stated that the biofuel alliance is something that Brazil has fought for a long time and that the country has specific expertise in this area. “What happened at the G20 was more important than the money spent on its organisation.” The global biofuel alliance is a fantastic effort, so we should mention India put money into it.
On September 9, India announced the formation of the Global Biofuel Alliance and invited G-20 nations to join the initiative in order to increase global ethanol blending with petrol to 20%. Mr. Modi announced the Alliance on the margins of the G-20 Summit, with US President Joe Biden, Mr. Lula, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
“Glad PM Modi and President Biden could be a part of it,” Mr. Lula added.
Mr. Lula also stated that taking over the G-20 is a major responsibility for Brazil. “We will prioritise gender, race, education, health, poverty, and hunger inequality.” “The world requires balance.”
Mr. Modi handed over the ceremonial gavel to Mr. Lula on September 10, kicking off the process of transitioning the President’s chair for the next edition of the G-20 in Brazil.
Mr. Lula also stated that another major priority for us is the reform of multilateral organisations, specifically the World Bank and the UN Security Council, where we need to reorganise the UN’s top body.
“What is the explanation for the fact that 130 million people go hungry today?” he wondered. “We must move towards growth while also focusing on equity; otherwise, GDP growth will benefit only a few people.” “If it’s more equitable, there will be less unrest, hunger, and poverty,” he says. The $800 billion African debt should be transformed into public works programmes for infrastructure construction.
My goal was to re-establish Brazil on the geopolitical map and to speak out against global inequity, said the President.
He also praised India on the successful summit. “The Brazilian people will put on a terrific show…We intend to use numerous Brazilian cities and make the G-20 popular among the general public. He stated, “We want a more democratic G-20.”
He said it would be up to Brazil’s judiciary to decide if Russian President Vladimir Putin would be detained if he attended next year’s G20 summit in the South American country. “If Mr. Putin decides to join, it is up to the judiciary, not my government,” Mr.
The Brazilian President also stated that he was unaware of why Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend the summit. “I hope they come to Rio next year, and I also hope Ukraine is no longer at war.”
Mr. Lula stated that the G-20 includes all BRICS and G7 countries, and that it is critical since it serves as an umbrella organisation for both. There is a need to overhaul the multilateral system, and we must all be members of the G-20.
“Three CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) countries are already members of the G20: Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico.” Membership in the African Union was critical. “Let’s see if the situation evolves to include other groupings,” he remarked.
Mr. Lula also announced that Brazil will not join the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
On September 9, 2023, the African Union was admitted as a full member of the G-20. Mr. Modi welcomed African Union Chairperson Azaly Assoumani to the G-20 leaders’ table, saying that the involvement of the African bloc will increase the G-20’s efficacy. The African Union is the G20’s second regional bloc to join after the EU.
