Thailand Releases Commemorative Stamp Showcasing 18th-Century Ramayan Murals During PM Modi’s Visit

Thailand unveiled a commemorative stamp featuring 18th-century Ramayan mural paintings on Thursday, marking the first day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

Expressing appreciation, PM Modi stated, “I am grateful to the Government of Thailand for issuing a special postage stamp based on the 18th-century Ramayan mural paintings to commemorate my visit.”

“A timeless impression and graceful symbol of our shared cultural relations! The Thai Government has released an iStamp on themes relating to the Ramayana. The stamp depicts Ramakien mural paintings that were painted during the reign of King Rama I,” the Prime Minister posted on X.

Adding to the cultural significance of the visit, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra presented PM Modi with the ‘World Tipitaka in Pali’ during their discussions at the Government House in Bangkok.

 

Upon arrival, PM Modi also attended a performance of the Thai Ramayana, ‘Ramakien’.

“A cultural connect like no other! Witnessed a captivating performance of the Thai Ramayana, Ramakien. It was a truly enriching experience that beautifully showcased the shared cultural and civilisational ties between India and Thailand. The Ramayana truly continues to connect hearts and traditions across so many parts of Asia,” the Prime Minister posted on X.

India and Thailand share deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, with Buddhism forming a strong link between the two nations.

Thai language, art, architecture, and literature exhibit significant Pali and Sanskrit influences, while Hindu elements are also visible in Thai traditions.

PM Modi’s International Visits Highlight India’s Heritage

PM Modi’s visits abroad often highlight India’s rich heritage.

  • In March 2025, during his visit to Mauritius, the Prime Minister paid homage at Ganga Talao, bringing holy water from the Triveni Sangam, reinforcing spiritual ties between the two nations.
  • In December last year, PM Modi met Kuwaiti scholars who translated and published Arabic versions of the Mahabharata and Ramayana.
  • During his November 2024 visit to Brazil, PM Modi was welcomed with Sanskrit mantras in Rio de Janeiro, where he also attended a Ramayan enactment by students of Vishwa Vidya, an organization dedicated to Vedanta and Sanskrit.The
  • During the Prime Minister’s visit to Guyana the same month, children performed Ram Bhajans and Vedic chants, while in Russia, people in Kazan welcomed him with a Krishna Bhajan.
  • During a visit to Laos, PM Modi watched a performance of the Lao Ramayan, known as Phalak Phalam or Phra Lak Phra Ram, staged by the Royal Theatre of Luang Prabang. The presence of Ramayan traditions in Laos underscores the enduring civilizational links between India and Southeast Asia.
  • In 2021, community members in Rome welcomed the Prime Minister with chants of the Shiva Mantra, underscoring the global resonance of India’s spiritual traditions.
