Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Bangkok, reaffirmed Thailand’s critical role in India’s ‘Act East’ policy and the Indo-Pacific vision.
Addressing the press alongside his Thai counterpart, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, PM Modi underscored the importance of fostering deeper economic, cultural, and strategic ties between the two nations.
PM Modi emphasized the commitment of both nations to upholding a free, open, and rule-based order in the Indo-Pacific region.
He reiterated India’s support for ASEAN unity and highlighted shared values between India and Thailand, including a commitment to development over expansionism.
“India fully supports ASEAN unity and ASEAN centrality. In the Indo-Pacific, we both support a free, open, inclusive, and rule-based order. We believe in the policy of development-ism, not expansionism,” said PM Modi.
In a significant step, the two leaders agreed to elevate India-Thailand ties to a Strategic Partnership.
As part of this initiative, they discussed the establishment of a Strategic Dialogue between security agencies, aiming to enhance cooperation in defense, maritime security, and counter-terrorism efforts.
PM Modi and PM Shinawatra explored ways to strengthen bilateral trade and investment, particularly in sectors such as tourism, MSMEs, agriculture, and fintech.
Agreements were signed to boost cooperation in handlooms, handicrafts, and small businesses.
Highlighting the centuries-old cultural ties between the two nations, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the Thai government’s issuance of a commemorative stamp featuring 18th-century Ramayana mural paintings.
“The story of the Ramayana is deeply ingrained in Thai folk life, and the influence of Sanskrit and Pali is still visible in Thai language and traditions today,” the Prime Minister noted.
PM Modi also received the sacred Tipitaka scriptures in Pali from PM Shinawatra as a gesture of shared cultural heritage.
“On behalf of ‘Buddha Bhoomi’ India, I accept this with folded hands,” he said, reaffirming India’s strong spiritual connection with Thailand.
Both leaders stressed the importance of strengthening security ties, particularly in maritime security and combating cybercrime.
PM Modi thanked the Thai government for its support in repatriating Indian victims of cyber fraud and emphasized collaborative efforts in countering terrorism and money laundering.
PM Modi’s visit to Thailand marks a significant step in fortifying India’s regional influence and deepening bilateral cooperation.
The discussions and agreements reached pave the way for stronger economic growth, enhanced security ties, and reinforced cultural exchanges between the two nations.
His visit comes ahead of the 6th BIMSTEC Summit, underscoring India’s commitment to fostering closer ties within the Bay of Bengal region.
PM Modi will visit Sri Lanka from April 4 to April 6 after his engagements in Thailand, aiming to further strengthen India’s ties with its regional partners.
