Sydney Beach Attack Claims 16 Lives, Marking Australia’s Deadliest Shooting In Decades

The death toll from a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach has risen to 16, New South Wales police confirmed on Monday, as authorities identified a father and son as the alleged attackers.

Police said 14 people died at the scene, while two others later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. The victims ranged in age from 10 to 87 years, and one of the deceased was among the alleged shooters.

As of Monday morning, at least 40 people were receiving treatment in the hospital, with five listed in critical condition. The scale of casualties has intensified concerns over public safety and emergency preparedness.

NSW Police Force Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the attackers were a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son. The older suspect, who was killed during the incident, held a valid firearms licence and legally owned six guns.

Attack During Religious Gathering

The shooting occurred at approximately 6:47 PM local time on Sunday, when the two men opened fire on a crowd of around 1,000 people gathered to mark the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.

Commissioner Lanyon confirmed that police had formally classified the incident as a terrorist attack, adding that investigations into the motive were ongoing.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an act of ‘pure evil’. In a statement on social media, he said Australia will not allow hatred or violence to divide the nation and pledged solidarity with Jewish Australians.

The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to confronting and eradicating antisemitism, calling it a serious threat to social harmony.

The Bondi Beach shooting is Australia’s deadliest mass attack since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania, which led to sweeping reforms of the nation’s gun ownership laws.

Authorities continue to investigate how the attack unfolded and to assess whether they need to introduce further security measures.
