Student Starts Fire At Finland Primary School, Hurting 3 Children

On Tuesday, police stated that a student opened fire at a school near Helsinki, hurting three other youngsters.

The policeman added that the perpetrator was in custody.

Vantaa’s school includes about 800 students and 90 staff members. The school serves children in grades one through nine, or ages seven through fifteen.

Shortly after 10:00 am (0700 GMT), police stated, “There are people injured in the shooting incident”.

Police were called to the location at 09:08 am and the injured were all 12 years old.

Following the shooting, the city of Vantaa’s crisis response team was activated.

Images from the site indicated a heavy police presence at the school.

In an update around 11:30, police said the suspect, who was carrying a gun at the time, was captured in a ‘calm manner’ in a Helsinki neighborhood.

Parents of students at the school told the media that the shooting took place in a classroom.

Police asked the public to avoid the area and remain indoors.

In a statement, police stated, “Do not open the door to strangers”.

Mari Rantanen, Finnish Interior Minister stated that the day had started in a shocking way.

“I can only imagine the pain and worry that many families are experiencing at the moment”, the minister added.
