Concerns over the future of the Strait of Hormuz have become a central point of debate following President Donald Trump’s new agreement with Iran, with lawmakers, former officials and energy experts questioning whether the deal could enhance Tehran’s influence over one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
The memorandum of understanding, signed last week, brought an end to nearly four months of tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Critics have raised concerns that the agreement may have strengthened Iran’s position in the narrow waterway through which a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports pass.
Former White House energy adviser Amos Hochstein warned that Iran’s role in the strait could become one of the agreement’s most consequential outcomes. He argued that Tehran could seek greater control over maritime traffic and potentially use access to the waterway as leverage in regional disputes.
Former US Defence Secretary Mark Esper echoed those concerns, cautioning that Iran may have gained a powerful strategic tool through its ability to influence energy flows and international shipping in the region. He stressed that allowing Iran to exert greater control over the Strait of Hormuz could represent a significant strategic setback.
The Trump administration has strongly rejected such criticism.
The Trump administration insisted the deal was negotiated from a position of strength and would help reduce tensions while protecting freedom of navigation.
Analysts warned that the future of the Strait of Hormuz remains crucial to global energy security, as any disruption could affect oil prices, supply chains and international trade.
