Salmonella Outbreak Linked To Recalled Eggs Sickens 98 Across 17 US States

A multi-state Salmonella outbreak linked to contaminated shell eggs has sickened at least 98 people across 17 US states, prompting an ongoing investigation by federal health authorities and renewed food safety warnings.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are working to determine the full scope of the outbreak and identify all possible sources of contamination.

According to health officials, reported illnesses occurred between November 21, 2025, and June 30, 2026.

While no deaths have been reported, 26 people have been hospitalised, highlighting the health risks posed by Salmonella infections, particularly for young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

Investigators have linked the outbreak to shell eggs recalled by Midwest Poultry Service, an Indiana-based producer.

The company recalled eggs produced between June 6 and July 3 after environmental testing detected the same strain of Salmonella associated with the outbreak.

Officials said the recalled eggs do not explain every reported illness, indicating that the investigation remains active.

The FDA has advised consumers to check their refrigerators for recalled eggs and verify the affected sell-by or best-by dates. Anyone who has purchased the recalled products should dispose of them safely or return them to the retailer for a refund.

Consumers should thoroughly clean and disinfect refrigerators, countertops, containers and any other surfaces that may have come into contact with the contaminated eggs.

Salmonella infection commonly causes diarrhoea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting.

Most healthy people recover within a week without treatment, but severe cases can require hospital care.

Health authorities continue to monitor the outbreak and are urging consumers to follow recall notices and food safety guidance to reduce the risk of infection.
