Russia’s foreign ministry said on Saturday that Washington’s decision to equip Ukraine with cluster munitions is a ‘act of desperation’ that will have no impact on Moscow’s campaign in Ukraine.
In a statement, ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, “It is an act of desperation and shows weakness against the backdrop of the failure of the much-touted Ukrainian counteroffensive”.
“The latest ‘miracle weapon’, on which Washington and Kiev are betting, will have no effect on the special military operation”, she added, referring to Russia’s official designation for its campaign in Ukraine.
According to Zakharova, the move demonstrates the US’ aggressive anti-Russian course, which is aimed at prolonging the conflict in Ukraine as much as possible.
She also stated that Ukraine’s assurances to utilize the contentious munitions responsibly are worthless.
Cluster bombs are used by Russia in Ukraine, however they are prohibited in many parts of the world.
Humanitarian organizations have fiercely opposed the United States’ choice to deploy cluster munitions, which can go undetonated and harm civilians for years.
US President Joe Biden confessed that equipping Ukraine with weapons capable of covering several football fields with hundreds of different tiny explosives was a ‘difficult decision’.
