Russia slammed Australia’s decision to bar Russia from establishing a new embassy after intelligence officials warned it would represent a security risk.
Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesperson said, “To our regret, Australia diligently continues to follow the path created by the authors of the Russophobic hysteria, which is now active in the countries of the collective West”.
“Australia aims for excellence among these countries”, he stated, adding that Russia might retaliate.
On Thursday, Australia barred Russia from constructing a new embassy in the shadow of Parliament House, citing intelligence authorities’ concerns that it would constitute an espionage and security threat.
Russia has a lease on a block of land 400 metres (0.25 miles) from Australia’s parliamentary area in Canberra and has begun preparing the foundations for a new embassy building.
However, after failing in court to stop the development, the Australian government passed new regulations on Thursday that were particularly drafted to delay its construction.
