Xi Jinping with Vladimir Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin landed in China on Thursday for his first international tour since re-election.
The two-day visit is the Russian leader’s second to China in six months.
More than two years after launching a full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine, Putin is seeking military and financial support from his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping, as the war and related sanctions continue with no end in sight.
When Putin arrived in Beijing, he was welcomed by Chinese officials and an honor guard, before being greeted by Xi in a magnificent welcoming ceremony outside the Great Hall of the People.
The leaders hailed the alliance as having ‘no limit’ in 2022.
However, as the economic alliance comes under strong scrutiny in the West, Chinese banks fearing US sanctions that might cut them off from the global financial system have begun to tighten the screws on Russian businesses.
The Kremlin announced this week that the two leaders would discuss their comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation as well as define key areas of development of Russian-Chinese cooperation and exchange views on international and regional issues.
