Prime Minister Narendra Modi To Participate In SCO Summit In Tianjin Today

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, a major diplomatic event bringing together regional leaders.

The summit includes participation from Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, alongside other member states.

With PM Modi, President Xi, and President Putin sharing the platform, the gathering highlights the importance of regional cooperation amid global challenges.

Later in the day, PM Modi will likely meet President Putin separately, with the two leaders expected to review India–Russia ties, particularly their long-standing partnership in energy and strategic sectors.

The summit itself will concentrate on tackling terrorism, separatism, and extremism, priorities at the heart of the SCO since its creation.

Leaders are also likely to take part in an agreement-signing session and issue a joint declaration this afternoon.

This marks PM Modi’s first visit to China in seven years, taking place as India and China cautiously rebuild relations after a tense border standoff. He will return to India later tonight after concluding his engagements.

On Sunday, ahead of the summit, PM Modi held talks with President Xi, their first meeting in nearly ten months.

The discussions focused on stabilising ties, with both sides agreeing to new patrol protocols along the 3,500-kilometre Line of Actual Control (LAC), signalling a step forward after years of friction.

The Tianjin meeting follows their last interaction at the BRICS Summit in Kazan in 2024.

Officials noted that this round of talks was aimed at sustaining momentum, with emphasis on economic cooperation, regional stability, and managing strategic competition in Asia.
