At a White House press briefing, US President Donald Trump announced the deployment of the National Guard to support efforts in restoring law and order and enhancing public safety in Washington, DC.
Trump further revealed that he has officially invoked the Home Rule Act, placing the Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal oversight, according to Xinhua news agency.
“This is Liberation Day in DC, and we’re going to take our capital back,” Trump stated.
He highlighted that his administration had already sent 500 federal agents to the district last week, including personnel from the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Park Police, the US Marshals Service, the Secret Service, and the Department of Homeland Security.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has persistently criticised violent crime and homelessness in the capital, blaming the local authorities for inadequate management and threatening federal intervention.
In response, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser defended the city’s safety in a Sunday interview with MSNBC, asserting, “We have spent over the last two years driving down violent crime in this city, driving it down to a 30-year low.”
On a separate issue, Trump announced that gold would be exempt from tariffs, which led to a significant fall in gold futures prices.
“Gold will not be Tariffed!” Trump confirmed in a brief post on Truth Social.
Gold futures, typically supported by bars shipped from Switzerland and other major trading and refining centres, had risen notably on Thursday and Friday due to speculation that US Customs and Border Protection would impose tariffs on 1-kilo and 100-ounce gold bars.
However, on Monday, gold futures for August delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange dropped by over 2 per cent.
The US recently introduced 39 per cent tariffs on imports from Switzerland, a country that holds considerable gold reserves and plays a pivotal role in the international gold futures market.
