PM Narendra Modi Meets Thaksin Shinawatra; Discusses Stronger India-Thailand Ties

During his visit to Thailand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Thursday and discussed ways to strengthen India-Thailand cooperation.

Calling him ‘a great friend of India’, PM Modi praised Shinawatra’s vast experience in governance and policy and shared details of their meeting on social media.

The two leaders explored key areas of mutual interest, including defense, trade, and culture.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “It was a delight to meet Mr Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister of Thailand. He has extensive experience in matters relating to governance and policy making. He is also a great friend of India and had a very warm relationship with Atal Ji. Mr Shinawatra and I talked at length about India-Thailand cooperation and how it benefits the people of our respective countries. We deliberated on the immense potential in areas like defence, trade, culture and more.”

Talks With Current Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra

Earlier in the day, PM Modi also held talks with current Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in Bangkok.

Calling it a ‘productive discussion’, PM Modi expressed gratitude for Thailand’s hospitality and conveyed solidarity following a recent earthquake in the country.

The Prime Minister also noted that India’s ‘Act East’ policy and Thailand’s ‘Act West’ policy align well and can lead to deeper bilateral engagement.

“Had a very fruitful meeting with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in Bangkok a short while ago. Expressed gratitude to the people and Government of Thailand for the warm welcome and also expressed solidarity with the people of Thailand in the aftermath of the earthquake a few days ago. India’s ‘Act East’ and Thailand’s ‘Act West Policies’ complement each other extremely well and open several possibilities for bilateral cooperation,” Prime Minister Modi posted on X.

PM Modi is currently in Thailand to attend the sixth BIMSTEC Summit, a regional gathering focused on enhancing cooperation among nations in the Bay of Bengal region.

The summit will take place on Friday.
