Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Gothenburg on Sunday, reaffirming the commitment of both countries to strengthen cooperation across several strategic sectors.
Crown Princess Victoria also attended the meeting and conveyed warm wishes from King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.
During the discussions, Prime Minister Modi extended his greetings to the Swedish monarch on his 80th birthday and highlighted the strong foundation of democratic values, rule of law and people-centric development that define India-Sweden relations.
The two leaders reviewed progress in bilateral ties and acknowledged growing cooperation in trade and investment, innovation, defence, security, digitalisation, green transition, emerging technologies, research, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
Both nations agreed to elevate their relationship to the level of a Strategic Partnership, reflecting the expanding scope of engagement between the two countries.
Prime Minister Modi stated that India and Sweden would continue working closely in sectors such as trade, defence, climate action, artificial intelligence and innovation. He noted that the partnership would help deepen collaboration in advanced technologies and sustainable development.
The Strategic Partnership will focus on security, economic cooperation, technology, sustainability and global resilience.
Both leaders also adopted the India-Sweden Joint Action Plan 2026–2030 to strengthen collaboration across key sectors.
The two sides welcomed the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and supported its early implementation to boost trade and investment.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson praised India’s progress in digital transformation and AI, while PM Narendra Modi invited greater Swedish investment in clean technology and manufacturing.
The leaders also discussed global issues, UN reforms and counter-terrorism cooperation, reaffirming their commitment to peace and sustainable economic growth.
